What is Blacksmithing
Blacksmithing is an ancient method used to shape iron and steel. A smith works hot iron like clay instead of removing material with a mill or a grinder. It was a worthy career in times past, when a blacksmith was the driving force of a town or village’s economy. Everyone needed something made or repaired, from horseshoes to wash basins, from kitchen knives to a knight’s sword and armor.
What started as a trade, over the centuries has become an art, one that was almost lost. Today’s demand for blacksmiths centers more on the ornamental work than the everyday. People these days are more interested in decorative railings than in having a plow resharpened.
